What an Event!

Apologies for all those that missed last night (25th September). The Access All Areas private view event went off with a bang. The pre christmas party season started off with pictures, people and plenty of wine, always a good combination!

ELREM’s first major event went like a dream, in no small part to Leman Locke Hotel, Printspace and many other people I should mention but am too excited to tell you all how it went down…

The portraits by Levent and were beautiful and I’m sure I saw a tear or two from those reading the biographies. The video brought nods of agreement, smiles in satisfaction and applause in appreciation.

The event started at 18.30 and we swilled our wine while chatting away with new and old friends alike. Around 19.30 we went upstairs to view the inspirational stories behind the participants involved in Access All Areas. Stories of triumph and disaster but most importantly endeavour and desire to succeed. Around 20.00 we came downstairs and everyone huddled up either on a plush chair or sparse floor but it didn’t matter anymore, everyone had bought into the evening by now.

What’s left to say? I heard someone whisper, but hold your horses we finish as we begun… Spreading a message, people will comprehend before they leave our event! What does Access All Areas mean? It means Access to All Areas of Society for the deaf and disabled community. Access to work, access to education and most important, access to Society. Access to the world outside your community, the hearing world that we all take for granted and others have to scrape and fight not to be ignored and overlooked.

As the Being Her twins finished up their rousing speech and the encapsulated audience finally understood! Hope was imbued, smiles were plentiful and friendships had been made. The original concept for celebrating International Week of the Deaf had been achieved and surpassed 10 times over.

As light became dark on our event and we slowly drifted away to the many different corners of London and the Home counties, an inner sense of relief and pleasure washed over us all as we had reversed the trend, dark had become light and hope had been restored…
